St. Hogwart's in the Marsh?

Saw this on the BBC footy gossip page and thought you'd like to know (the BBC hacks obviously saw it elsewhere too),...

"Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand and his fiancee Rebecca Ellison have arranged for a barn owl to swoop down the aisle and deliver their rings in a velvet pouch when they get married in August. (Daily Mirror)"

How classy is that?!

Sorry,... tacky,... I meant 'How stupefyingly, cloyingly tacky is that?!'

Better correct myself, you could get arrested for such blatant misuse of the term 'classy'.

Be fair, you're only commenting on this because Rio plays for Man Utd, when, in reality, the truth is that such lack of taste is endemic amongst the stars of the Premier League, whether they play for Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, or even your own Liverpool!
Of course, there are still decent and modest players even at the top level, but they don't sell glossy magazines...

Gwentbirding? Biased against Man U plc? Shurely shome mishtake! Actually, I was just mentioning it because it involved a bird :-)

I shall have to admit that, without knowing the credentials of any other footballers, past or present, the only one who was certainly a birder was former Liverpool reserve keeper Mike Hooper, who, so the story goes, once found a flyover Little Egret (when the species was a BBRC rarity) over the Liverpool training ground: is there any truth in this? If so, does this explain why he never really became your main choice keeper, if he was too busy looking for overshoots...?

There are also rumours that Billy Bonds was a twitcher, and that Teddy Sheringham liked feathered birds as well as the unfeathered ones...I even heard that Roy Keane has taken part in the RSPB Garden Birdwatch...

(If the unlikely Keano rumours are true, then he should come back, as we are short of observers here, but how would he take to having a record of his rejected by the IRBC...? )

I've heard that Mike Hooper story before. If he did have a Little Egret over Melwood it didn't get past the BBRC; there's no mention in the reports that cover his time at Anfield. The only possibility is that he had it in 1992 or 1993 (before he left for Newcastle but after Little Egret was dropped by the BBRC).

Is there anybody out there willing to check the local reports?

PS. Yes, you're right, I have no life. What do you expect, I live in Gwent for Jeebus' sake.
